Shifting 2N

(1/1)

andersonat053201:
I just purchased a 1944 Ford 2N and have a question about shifting. The person I bought it from told me to shift it like a truck. I found that when it is in 1st or 2nd gear trying to shift up, by pressing in on the clucth slows down the tractor. I was told that shifting to Third Gear starting off will hurt the clutch, but when I try and drive and shift 1-3 it seems pointless. What am I doing wrong???

9nford:
They are not Trucks

9N, 2N, and 8N Ford tractors do not have syncro transmissions. They are meant to be shifted when fully stopped. You can not shift them like a car or truck, if you do you will eventually damage the transmission.

When starting in a higher gear, 3rd or 4th, just slowly let out the clutch... this will not hurt the clutch...

lha:
No matter what you were told, shifting is done while stopped. the trans. on all n models were unsynchronized, meaning no shifting on-the-fly.---lha
