9N starting problem
« on: May 22, 2008, 05:39:42 PM »
I have a 1939 9N , converted to 12 volt by previous owner. Ran well at first then starting problems began. We rewired most of the harness. This corrected the problem and started easily each time it was tried. The last time the tractor was started, the starter sounded as if it did not disengage. the tracror was stopped and now will not even try to turnover. We disconnected the positive cable from the battery, checked all connections, disconnected the starter and checked for power all the way to the starter cable. We reconnected all wiring and when the battery cable was reconnected all looked ok. We tried to start the tractor, but immediately the starter button started smoking. We removed the battery cable once again, but the starter button was already damaged . Is it possible if the starter did not disengage, that the starter acted as a generator, damaging other components?
