Look through the inspection plate[with the dipstick] and make sure that the control arms are hooked to each side of the control valve. Mine came off one time and explored many potential problems before discovering this simple problem.

O'reilly's has BWD brand points for the 9n,2n and 8n. Part # for front mount is A41. They are good points,I've put them onm my '41 9n,and they work well.

In 1939 there was no such thing as live hydraulics. These machines were the state of the art in their day.It was 20yrs later before that existed. The pto drives the pump, so only works when the clutch is out,and pto is engaged. When you get used to it ,it's not a problem, just rig up a set of chains to go from the pins on implements to the top link area. you will be able to adjust the minimum hight of the hog,so it stays where you want it thus the name"stay chains".---lha

« on: April 29, 2010, 02:48:11 AM »
There will be extra wires as stated, but it will work.If you've already bought the harness ,just don't use those wires.roll them up and tape the ends to keep them out of the way, then in case of failure of a wire, you can swap out same color on both ends. Remember electricity can't tell what color the wire is coated with.---lha

No matter what you were told, shifting is done while stopped. the trans. on all n models were unsynchronized, meaning no shifting on-the-fly.---lha

Gotta give a little more info.was it running at one time when you had it? did it just stop running?did you just get it? If it spins but does not engage motor, the bendix is bad or has fallen off.Take the starter off and take it to a "mom&pop" starter shop & get it looked at &-or fixed,or if bendix is off have starter checked & replace bendix.---lha

You have to get used to the way these machines operate. The 9n,2n,8ns were a technological marvel in their day,but are now crude.they were the first ones to offer 3pt hitch with hydraulics, you wouldn't buy a T model ford expecting it to have A/C,P/S,auto,cruice control as those things didn't come out for years. If you are not using the lift, disengage by using the pto shifter by your left heel. You should get a manual for your tractor.---lha

I would suggest getting an I&T F-O4 manual as it shows only one 'sleeve' to replace. An easy way to remove a pressed on sleeve is to drill 1/8' holes in a line parallel to the shaft,NOT all the to the shaft, then, with a sharp cold chisel, back side supported on anvil or vice, break sleave.replace sleave after installing bearings by heating and pressing on.lha

From the sr#s you have a '46 2n.If it is an early 9n,it will have a cast aluminum grill and dash and other differences, like horizontal bars on grill. Having said that, many parts have been begged, borrowed,or stolen from others. The main thing to look for would be the dash,as it is not likely to have been changed out.---lha

« on: October 28, 2009, 03:24:21 AM »
Assuming the # are right[as they are not stamped very well]you have a '44 2n,which would still have 9n#.There were subtle changes throughout the years, and parts taken from other tractors. You cannot really trust the serial#s completely as some of the motors were changed from 8n-9n-2n,and vice versa---lha

I think the flanges should face each other, having said that, you should ask a tractor mechanic or service personel at new holland about it.It has been years since I had the pump apart---lha

Make sure you clean the mounting surface on the bell housing and the 'tube' where the back plate contacts it ,as these places effect the ground. The starter MUST have a GOOD ground to spin properly.Mine,'41-9n,works very well and is 6v+g,starts well everytime,90*-10*. Grounds must be clean&tight.---lha

9N,2N,8N, Ford Tractors / Re: air breather
« on: October 01, 2009, 02:59:30 PM »
there was an aftermarket[on 9ns]breather that had a bottle where air would pass and settle. Some also had a pipe through the hood to pull the air in.This is to keep the fan from drawing dust in to the breather.Unless you are using the tractor for heavy use like that, you don't need it.---lha
